Hello Team! Great conference call today. It looks like our presentation is done and looks quite nicely, if I may say so myself :) Just a reminder that we will have another conference call on Mon. 02-28-11 at 9pm to practice one last time.

B. Mission Statement

To be an open minded group, where opportunities are available for learning and growth, as well as become more familiar with various social media tools and be able to apply this knowledge towards organizational performance.

C. Vision Statement

Our vision is to support one another in our learning through collaborative efforts, and understanding.

D. Shared Values

Honesty: Convey one’s ideas and thoughts honestly as this is the best way to maximize the value from each team member.

Mutual respect: Commit to listening to and understand each team member’s ideas, so that we can effectively evaluate them and arrive at the best possible result.
Commitment: Follow through on your commitments in terms of meeting times, communication and deliverables. If a meeting or deadline is in jeopardy, then communicate this to the team as soon as possible.

Communication: Communication is vital to a successful group. Everyone is encouraged to participate and share ideas openly and positively. Positivity is also important for successful communication. People are more open to hearing positive statements than negative ones. Sometimes it is helpful to use “warm & fuzzies” to communicate in a more positive way.

Team-work/Motivation: In order to produce the best product we can we must value the work we do as a team. In an effort to keep the team spirit alive we should come up with a team name and logo. Then we will all feel we are part of our own unique group and motivated to contribute to the group effort.

E. Desirable team behaviors and consequences for non-compliance

Punctuality: If an unforeseen conflict results in a late member, then communicate this to the team as soon as possible otherwise, please be on time.
Reliable: We follow rules of the road such as time and place to meet, complete assignment (not half way done). Meeting deadlines is important and if one team member is having trouble completing his/her section other team members should provide support by sharing ideas.

As far as consequences for being non-compliant…this will be reflective in the person’s individual grades from the professor and group members at the time of evaluation which will happen at the end of our project (s).

F. Summary of individual member strengths and weaknesses (self-assessed)
Members Individual areas of strength (eg., good writer, editor, researcher, organizer, communicator, technology-adept, etc.) Growth areas for teamwork (eg., limited team experience, tend to “take charge and want to be in control”, writing weaknesses, inexperienced editor, etc.
Garret Earley I enjoy writing and editing writing as well. I am a good communicator and I enjoy learning about new technology and teaching others to use new technology. I sometimes struggle with getting too involved with new technology and assigning too much value to new technology prior to proving the technology to be effective.
Jackie Lopez I enjoy writing a lot (novels, plays, research papers, etc). I am good at editing my own as well as the work of others. I am also a good communicator. I am very detail oriented as well. Although I don’t enjoy it, I am a good researcher. Can work with Excel & ppt too. I am currently working hard at becoming more tech. savvy therefore I wouldn’t be the best person in the group to turn to but will try very hard if I had to. Also, I tend to be a perfectionist, which sometimes can be seen as another area in which I can grow.
Shing Vang Visual person so have eyes to make things a little “prettier” or “presentable”, very organized, can work with excel, some ppt, publisher, research, communicator Not a good writer, but can edit other’s work, have a little problem with numbers (a little dyslexic in getting #’s switched around)

G. Team conflict management plan

First, it is important for us to try to understand where the person is coming from so that he/she can be understood, which does not necessarily mean we are ok with the conflict. The next step is to see how, as a group, can we work together to resolve the conflict. If the conflict has to do with a decision within the group, then the alternate ideas can be presented to the group and the group can vote. If the conflict is personal and the parties cannot come to a working agreement, then it may be necessary to involve the professor.

H. Statement of team decision protocol

Our goal is to meet on scheduled times. At the conclusion of each meeting, each team member should have some individual action items that he/she will need to address by the next meeting time. It is important to be flexible regarding both meeting times and collaboration via email/blog/text/conference call. We are expected to be available upon all agreed meeting times. If one of us cannot make a meeting we should provide the team with as much notice as possible. In some cases the team should go ahead and meet, as work can still be done.

I. Encouragement of Teamwork

COMMUNICATION!!!!!!!!!!!!! By advocating for open communication, we will be capable of better results. Remote teams can be challenging and communication is a foundation that must be built first for successful teamwork. Please come prepared with questions and brainstorm before the meeting. In addition, we should have objectives and goals for each meeting so that we are not distracted and can focus.

Inclusivity: People come to a group with a variety of experiences, knowledge, and backgrounds. In order to benefit from each other we should accept each other and all that we bring to the table.

Safe Environment: To establish and maintain a good learning environment we should acknowledge our weaknesses as well as our strengths and not cast judgment or ridicule on questions, comments, or ideas we each have; in doing so we can work past our weaknesses and provide an opportunity for each of our strengths to shine, while still being united as a team.

J. Team self-assessment approach and methodology

Complete a simple survey after each project. In addition, have a meeting to clarify or discuss any questions or concerns.

Notes From Conference Call 02/12/11

Hello Team Dragon! Here are our notes from today's conference call in regards to our power point presentation:

* Garret will give an overview of the social media tools/technology used at Henry Schein Dental
* Shing will go over the challenges Henry Schein Dental faced from social media tools/technology
* J. Lo will conclude with the successes Henry Schein Dental received from utilizing social media tools/technology

Please remember to submit your power point notes through Word Doc-Blog Post. As new power point notes are updated through Team Dragon's blog, all will help to edit the slides. The next official conference call is tentatively scheduled for Sat. 02/26/11, if not sooner (TBD)...

I just wanted to let you both know how wonderful it is to be in a group where the team is very supportive and encourages collaboration...This week's reading in our Collaborating Online book touched on how instructors should promote and encourage students to pick their own leaders and/or make decisions within the group at the beginning. This type of support helps to minimize the possibility of conflict down the road. It also creates a collaborative problem solving approach from beginning to the end of the final collaborative assignment and I believe our team is on the right track :)

Thanks so much for everything!

Consolidated questions

Good afternoon,

I consolidated the list of questions. We had less overlap than I thought which is awesome. I am posting them below for your review. We don't have to do the conference call thing as long as we can come to agreement in this forum (or through text) on the questions to be asked. Please let me know if you have any objections. Jackie probably won't get this until later so I will text her (you) the questions. She might be unable to read them but at least she will have them available. I hope it's okay that I send the list to Andy now so at least he has an idea of what is possible in terms of questions for tomorrow. Good work everyone. These questions are sure to get us all the information we need. Talk to you soon.P.S., if everyone feels like talking still at 10PM, I am fine with that. Just let me know. Also, my preference would be to ask questions 8-14, but I am open to alternatives.

Thanks,

Garret

Conference Call

Hi Team,

I just wanted to let you know that I have a game tonight and will not be back until about 10:00pm. I have to stay for the Varsity game--it's a program thing-- all the coaches from the other team including the players will be staying as well. Apparently this game will help with the seeding. I know that 10 is really late so if you want to do it without me, I will understand.

Garret, if you both decide to do the conference call without me can you fill me in tonight? Or will tomorrow morning prior to the interview be better? Let me know.

Thanks for understanding team,
J.Lo

About Conference Call 02-03-11

I have a conference call today with my other group after work so if we do it later, say...7pmish, I think it would be fine.

Shing

J.Lo's Interview questions

1) What resistance have you seen? From whom? Why?

2) Are there additional social media tools that you or your team would consider using?

3) How have the leaders of the organization adapted to the use of these tools? Did they need to adopt the idea? Or did they welcome it to begin with?

4) What, if any, have been the problems that you have had to overcome through the use of social media tools?

5) What recommendations would you have for other companies that are considering using social media tools?

6) If you had to create a strategy for getting management/organizational leaders to adopt the utilization of these tools, what was your strategy? If not what would have been your strategy?

7) What do you see as the biggest benefit to your company as a result of utilizing the blog? Other tools?

8) Are there any organizations that have been successful in implementing their social media tools that you have modeled your efforts after?

9) Do you see any negative impacts for utilizing the blog/other social media tools?

FYI

One more thing....
I told Andy that I would send the questions to him ahead of time since we have a limited time for the interview (30 minutes) and so he has the time to think about the information prior to attending.
All, these are the questions that I came up with. I know some of them overlap with Shing's questions. If everyone is okay with it, I can put them together and then at that point we can identify who will be asking what. Can we do another conference call? Maybe this evening? I am free today so I can be flexible. Send me a text with a couple of times that work for you if that's okay and we can go from there.

Thanks,

Garret

Interview & Team Goal

Thank you Garret!!! Woo hoo!! Great work on securing this interview for us. Now we need to just start putting together some interview questions. I also think that we should keep in consideration that we will most likely end up asking additional questions while the interview is taking place.

I'd also like to recommend that we all share in the note taking. This way we are more inclined to capture everything he says just in case one of us misses it, while still being able to maintain eye contact and appropriate non-verbals during the interview.

Team Goal: Let's try and have all of our questions finalized by Thursday at 12pm (noon). This will give us time (Thursday evening) to rework any "weird" sounding questions and/or make sure we don't have any duplicates.

Thanks again Garret!

Thanks Andy,
There is a Peet's on Fairway and Pleasant Grove right by the 65 if that would work better. It's right next to the Nugget market. If not, Peet's at the fountains is fine as well.
Thank you,

Google chat

Hi all,

I got this from the website below and it is relevant to what we were discussing. Thanks for taking the time to meet today.

http://www.problogger.net/archives/2009/03/18/google-chat-a-bloggers-best-friend/

7 Google Chat Features You Might Not Know About

1: Transcript. One very simple, yet amazingly useful feature of Gchat is the fact that each conversation is saved in a transcript form email. This means you not only have access to all the words shared, but you can treat them like those in an email. They can be searched for, forwarded, labeled, etc… And they all reside in the ‘Chats’ section, just two links down from your Inbox.

I didn’t think much of this feature until I started using Gchat on a regular basis. One day I had a great conversation with a fellow blogger and had discussed ideas for future blogging projects. Weeks later I wanted to reference a few sentences that had passed back and forth. So I just typed in a few key words in the Gmail search field and BINGO! There was the entire conversation, ready for reference.

2: Go off the record. If, for any reason, you don’t want your conversation recorded, there’s a nifty feature of Gchat that handles this beautifully. Just click on the ‘Video & more’ button on the bottom right of your Gchat window and then click ‘Go off the record’. It’s as easy as that! Just keep in mind that, if not changed back, your future ‘conversations’ with that particular Gmail user will always be ‘off the record’.

3: Pop-out. In that same menu from the ‘Video & more’ button you can click ‘Pop-out’. This will un-integrate or unstick the Gchat window from your gmail page and allow you to move it where ever you prefer. This is great for so many reasons! You may want to keep ‘talking’, but move away from your Gmail page to a different location on your computer or in your browser. I love to pop my Gchat window over to my second monitor and fully enjoy the freedom of ‘chatting’ and working/surfing at the same time. It’s Googleiscious! :-)

4: You can have multiple ‘conversations’ at the same time. A few weeks ago I was having a ‘back and forth’ with a friend when I received a Gchat message from a fellow blogger who I’d been waiting to hear from. My knee jerk reaction was to say goodbye to the friend so I could talk to the blogger. But I decided to see what a double conversation felt like in the land of Gmail. Within a few seconds I realized that it was not only possible to talk to two ‘chatters’ at the same time, but actually quite efficient!

If you IM much you know there’s that little bit of downtime between ‘pings’. With two people to talk to you can get into a natural rhythm which fills all those time voids and allows for maximum use of conversation time.

5: Group chat. Once again, located in the pop-up menu of ‘Video & more’, you can select ‘Group chat’ to connect with more than one ‘chatter’ and create a three-way conversation (or more). You just initiate the chat with one of the users and then click on ‘Group chat’ to start bringing others into the conversation. I’ve found this to be an amazing way to collaborate and just chat away with groups of friends, bloggers and colleagues.

6: You can chat with AIM and iChat users. For a while I didn’t realize that a blogging friend of mine whom I chat with regularly, was using his iChat to connect with me on Gchat. It all felt the same on my end as the connection was seamless. And if you have an AIM account you can log directly into it and chat with other AIMers, all through your Gmail account.

7: Video/Audio Gchat. Back in November Google added an exciting feature to Gchat. Now you can see and hear those you are in conversation with, which can be a wonderful change from the tedious typing when your conversations become more involved.

I'll be on the conference line at Noon if you both can join me at that time, if not, we can set up another call as well. That's too bad about CFF. Good effort on that. I will keep my fingers crossed for Intel. I also sent a message to Andy Matthews and I am hoping to hear back today. Talk to yo

If you can all read this as a new post that means... I can post too!!! :D

Garret, you did a great job setting this up for us. Thank you. And, I totally love the conference call idea too!

I'm sad to inform you both that my contact at CFF e-mailed me back. She said they don't utilize social workplace tools. So I am keeping both my fingers and toes crossed that one of you will achieve success!

Have a great Monday!

Hi Jackie L.

Hi Jackie,

I would like to be able to tell you over the phone. That way I can better explain the features etc. while I walk you through it. I think it's semi-private in that people can see it, but they can not edit unless given rights (or have been invited). I invited Jackie A.M. as well so we should be good to go. Should I contact Andy Matthews? What did you think of that idea?

Thanks,

Garret

Another idea

A friend of mine is a field sales rep. with Henry Schein who is one the largest suppliers of Medical and Dental products in the world. This morning I remembered that he uses a blog to stay connected to his clients. I'm sure that he would be willing to meet with us (might be over the phone due to his travel schedule), but I have pasted his web address below so you can see what its all about.

http://andyrmatthews.blogspot.com/

How to post documents to our Blog

  1. Click the Office Button in the left hand corner.
  2. Click on "Publish"
  3. For the first time you post, it will ask you to register. Select "blogger" from the dropdown and then continue.
  4. Enter your regular gmail.
  5. It should be all set for you to go back to the Office Button and select publish.

That's fine for the gym idea. I can make any appt work. For Nugget there are several so let me talk to them and if what they are using fits the criteria, I can find something central for all of us. Let me work a little more on the blog then for that part of it. I will throw in our emails and you all can tell me what you think. That will be tonight or tomorrow morning.
Thanks,
Garret

This came from a Yahoo article on the 10 best places to work. It seemed like with Apple they were reluctant to discuss anything with me for fear that we are exposing their proprietary secrets or something. Also, for some companies Social Media is reserved for use at the Corporate level and not for people that may be in the retail stores. What does everyone think about approaching Nugget (I have one a block away) to ask them about their willingness to share?

Thanks,

Garret

Ten Corporate Blogs Worth Reading
Posted on 19. Feb, 2009 by Adam in Blogging
Corporate blogs can be dry and lack the personality of some of the independent blogs. They tend to be far more censored because of legal and public relations concerns, too. But they can be a great source of information on the market and other topics of entrepreneurial interest. Here are ten “big blogs” that are worth reading regularly, even if they are written by large corporations:
1. Official Google Blog (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/)
It’s ranked #1 on Technorati’s top Corporate Blogs, and whether you approve of Google as a company or not, if you do any kind of business on the internet, you must acknowledge this company’s influence on all things web-related.
2. LinkedIn Blog (http://blog.linkedin.com/)
Stay on top of changes in the job market, learn how to use the LinkedIn application, read about how to use social media to make the most of your professional contacts.
3. Whole Story: The Whole Foods Blog (http://blog.wholefoodsmarket.com/)
As a pioneer in conscious consumerism and one of the most successful retailers in the country, Whole Foods’ blog combines business news infused with the unique Whole Foods philosophy, along with delicious topics on all kinds of food, wine, and environmental issues.
4. The Chatter: The Official Ebay Blog (http://www.ebaychatter.com/)
Keep your finger on the pulse of the most successful and popular online auction website. The Chatter covers Ebay as both a company and a community, and regularly features some of the coolest auctions posted on the site.
5. Check Out Blog: The Official Wal-Mart Blog (http://www.checkoutblog.com/)
Whether you like Wal-Mart or not, this retail giant is a huge force in the retail marketplace, and regularly reading their blog can help you stay abreast of trends that inevitably occur when they make announcements. Despite Wal-Mart being a big, faceless corporation the bloggers on this site are surprisingly personable in their writing.
6. The Fast Lane: GM’s Blog (http://fastlane.gmblogs.com/)
As one of the largest manufacturers in the U.S., and in light of the major economic impact this company has had on American taxpayers in the past year, keeping up with this blog is a great way to stay up on the forces that are shaping the future of the economy right now.
7. Future Banking Blog (http://futurebanking.bankofamerica.com)
This blog is a collaborative effort between Bank of American and MIT which addresses the future of the banking industry, and the steps that are being taken to evolve banking as a business. If you are interested in money at all you should read this blog.
8. Values in Practice: The McDonald’s Corporate Blog (http://www.crmcdonalds.com/publish/csr/home/_blog.html)
McDonald’s remains one of the most successful corporations in America, and continues to show profits even during the current recession. But what makes this blog so unique is that it is an official corporate blog that is primarily focused on corporate responsibility and sustainability.
9. Amazon Daily (http://www.amazon.com/gp/daily)
Amazon is the premier internet marketplace, and the official blog gives information about the company as well as product information from editors in every product category. Customers can give private feedback to the writers or leave a public comment.
10. The Platform: Opinions and Insights from Cisco (http://blogs.cisco.com)
One of the world’s largest manufacturers of networking and security technologies, Cisco’s official blog will give you a glimpse into the inner workings of a tech giant, and help you stay aware of product and financial news that will have an impact on the market.

Apple was unfortunately a dead end. I was surprised that the company that brought us the Podcast had nothing to offer. I think it was more that they were unwilling to share anything though. I have a friend that does contract work for SCA which is an insurance appraisal company. They are pretty large and national. I'll check with him because they did have a teleconference the other day with an online interactive component to the meeting. Google Docs is fine as it is already established and it should get the job done.

Thanks everyone,

Garret

Shing & Garret,

Shing: I'm glad to hear you are working on Intel. Keep us posted on how that goes.

Shing & Garret: I just sent out an e-mail/post from google dragons explaining my status report with my gym contact. In my e-mail to them I asked for an interview early next week. It will give us time to work on what questions we need to ask, etc.
Also: I was wondering if the two of you can access (and post) via google dragons. Just curious if we want to use this tool so that I can invite Jackie as well--that way she knows we are working hard on this project.

Thanks,
Jackie

Hi Team Dragons,

Hope your enjoying your Friday. I just wanted to give you a status
report. My contact at the gym finally returned my call late afternoon
yesterday (I was taking team pictures and couldn't get back to her
before 5pm). Per her voicemail message, I sent her an email of the
description of our project guidelines which she will forward to their
communications/marketing department--she said this would be the best
to people to help field our questions.

The name of the gym/organization is: California Family Fitness (CFF)
The name of my contact person in their HR dept is: Erin Norris
Website: www.californiafamilyfitness.com

I left her another v-mail today (still playing phone tag) to confirm
that she received my latest email. I will keep you posted as I hear
more.

Happy Friday,
Jackie

P.S. I have a big basketball game tonight but will have to be there
around 3:30-4:00 (my game starts at 5:30). I will have my phone on me
feel free to text me or e-mail me. I will do my best to take her call
if she calls back around that time.

Hello you two! I am at work and wanted to quickly email you two that I am working at trying to see if I can talk to someone from Intel so that we can get going on our project. It sounds like they have social media but the hangup is trying to find a person who will take the time to talk to me. Wish me luck!

Jackie, if yours is a go...let's move forward with the fitness center...

I'll try out google dragon when I get off of work.

Thanks for everything!

I was playing around with the settings and it looks like we can all
post now. Try it out and see if you can respond if you can and if you
are all ok with using google groups as an additional tool I think we
are good to go as far as the tools go.

Shing,
Thanks for doing the leg work to find out about the weight watchers thing. Garret didn't have much luck at the Roseville location (he just texted me) but he did get some info for the Elk Grove location hopefully this will be better. In addition to leaving a voicemail for Erin (CFF) I emailed her. I remember that emailing is a good way for her to communicate.

Keep up the good work team. I will start becoming more unavailable as it reaches closer to 2pm. Emails and texts are working great and should continue to while I'm with the JV team.

Jackie

P.s. I love how "in the loop" we are keeping each other. :D

Thanks,

Yeah Garret...I hope you can talk to Apple! Just to let you all know, I spoke to a rep on the phone from Weight Watchers and they do have an online program for members where they can talk to each other, but I am not a member and will not be able to check it out. The problem I found with Weight Watchers is that the actual physical place where they hold classes are not open all day. They have specific times when the building is open. For example, the one in Elk Grove is closed today and will open tomorrow from 2pm-4pm and then Fri from 8am-1:30pm. Also, in talking to the lady, she wasn't very familiar with it and I asked her if there was one person at the site that would be able to help and she was not very sure as these people were more of the personal interactions type and not necessarily social media type. It sounded like this Social Network is done and organize at the Corporate level.

This doesn't sound like a go with Weight Watchers.

Okay,
Now I have the email traffic and I am back in the loop. No problem with the wikispaces. I can convert to another tool if you all want. I enjoy doing it so its no big deal. When I get home ill send the blogspot link. I did it, I was just concerned that it didn't turn out user friendly. I'll talk to Apple too since I'm here.
Thanks,

Hi again team,

I just called and left a message for Erin, my contact at California Family Fitness. I have to be on the bus 2pm today so if she calls me back anytime after then I will do my best to returner call before my game at 5pm (ish).

I also called Mary Haynes at Barnes & Noble and spoke with another mgr. who told me that it would be better to Mary about our project, she seemed very uninterested and not willing to help. Mary starts her shift at 4pm today so I will be getting more info later this evening to share with you ( I hope).

Sorry for the over communication just wanted to keep you all in the loop on my status.

Have a great day,
Jackie

Hi Team,

So in an effort to create another space (I'm sorry Garret that Jackie won't let us use wikispaces) I created and invited you both to a google group called google dragons. I tried to post something for a discussion so that you all will be able to see it and it said that I don't have sufficient permissions to do this which I don't understand since I created the darn thing. Just goes to show how tech savvy I'm not lol!! Maybe I need to have another member accept first??

Now, I'm not even sure if you all even got my invitation to join...good grief! In it I told you that if you both choose to not use google groups as a tool my feelings will not be hurt and that is still the case. Since I can't start off a converstaion we may have to dump this idea anyway. I just thought I would try my hand at this tool business. :)

Hi Garret,

Thanks for working on this. I'm sorry you had a difficult time with blogspot. I really like the wikispaces idea too but I remember Jackie saying that we can't use it, since this is what we are using for our other class assignments. I hope you didn't put too much time into it.
Myabe just sticking to googledocs is what we will have to do.

Hi Team!!

So our deadline to have our project completed will be here before we know it.

Garret: Shing and I spoke briefly after class on Tuesday about who we can interview and what social media tool we can use. This was more like a brainstorming session, here is what we discussed:

Tools: Google Docs-It's the only one we both know how to use but I was wondering if both of you would be willing to try one of the other "free" tools. I'd like a chance to learn how to use a new tool and I have not had the best of success with Google Docs in the past. If we do use google docs, we will need each others gmail addresses. Here is mine: coachlopez24@gmail.com Please use this one to communicate with me--checking my drexel email is quite the task for me.

Drexel Group Pages: We discussed this idea briefly but I looked into it and it seems like we will have to get Jackie A.M. to set it up for us and it will be available for the entire class to see--I could be wrong though.

Project Ideas: Drexel, California Family Fitness (CFF), and Weight Watchers. I have a connection at CFF whom I've been using for my other HRD assignments--but I'm not sure if they will be appropriate for this project.

Extra information:
Barnes & Noble: After class on Tuesday, I had to go to the book store (Barnes & Noble) and while I was there I asked the mgr if they use virutal communities. She said YES!! She has to ask permission for us to interview her and I'm still waiting on a response which is good since I wanted to run the idea past you all as well.

Apple: While talking with the Mgr. she suggested we look into apple as well. She said she knew for a fact that they use virutal communities internally and if her district mgr said they couldn't do it, Apple would be the next best thing. Personally I think this idea is better anyway. Again wanted to get your thoughts.

Garret & Shing I am looking forward to working with you both! I have worked with both of you before on separate projects and was excited to see that we were in the same group. I know our group will be great! :)

See you soon,
Jackie

P.S. sorry for the super long e-mail, they will get shorter after this. :)
